I was happy seeing them enjoying the jokes and making fun of the stupid ones. But it's still sad because we know Riley is going to die soon. If we didn't then I don't think that scene would have been as powerful.
We now know where she got that joke book from.
During the main game, she takes out that book and starts reading it to Joel a few times. When I replay the game, those parts will have a bigger impact on me since I know what Ellie is trying to do. She's trying to recreate that happy moment. She wants another friend to laugh with. But Joel isn't as interested in jokes as Riley was, so that's going to make those parts depressing. Even more so when she shares those jokes with Sam. Someone around her own age who actually likes to hear jokes but we know he doesn't live long after.
I love how much emotion this game makes me feel.
